As an agroecologist, Sumit has conducted extensive research in the field on sustainable farming. He even wrote an entire thesis on the “permaculture land design”. He believes that he can only associate with the problems being faced by the farmers and the factors influencing the farmlands if he steps into the shoes of the farmers and has the first-hand experience with them on the farmlands in order to plunge deeper into the roots of the complex land planning issues, and not just observe and take note of things from a superficial aspect. To be able to enhance the productivity of the farm, he has to relate his real-world experience with the knowledge and skillset which he has acquired through his advanced studies.

During this research, he also used qualitative tools like photography, rich-pictures, focus group interview with pictorial questionnaires, resource maps, seasonal calendars and visioning workshop, wherein, his enhanced creative skills and the photography course which he had attended before proved to be an aide.

According to Sumit, many farmers have lost the quality of their farmlands due to monoculture, climate change and land grabbing along with growing urbanization and human population turning out to be a menace resulting in agricultural land crisis. This is one of the primary reasons why he considers adopting holistic measures towards land usage is the need of the hour. And, hailing from the interior designing background, he has experience of spatial planning wherein his core competence has been to design to maximize the output of the given space both functionally as well as aesthetically, and to keeping the space environmentally healthy.

Sumit Baradia is a person with a great vision to work towards the betterment of the agricultural sector of the nation and give utmost priority to the lives of the farmers and the ecosystem in which they work. The quality of food and the farms per se can only improve if the spatial planning of the farms is done efficiently. And this has been the ultimate objective which keeps him at his toes.

His advanced studies in the field of Agroecology have helped in developing the core competencies which form an integral part of the curriculum of the course he attended in the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, where he worked upon his competencies such as observation, participation, dialogue, reflection and visioning.
